Mountainside to north is dissected by FS logging roads choked with ferns. Slopes are northern hardwoods with small patches of spruce and hemlock. On ridge to west is beech-red oak/Dryopteris campyloptera.;Sandstone ridgetop bedrock outcrop with narrow ledges divided by 10 ft. and deep crevaces. Open canopy of spruce with live branches only in top 1/3 and relatively open subcanopy approaches woodland physiognomy. Rock substrate provides habitat for deep bryophyte cushions on top and lichens on vertical surfaces. Abundant Polypodium appalachinum.
Representativeness
Plot is a specialized local habitat of spruce forest on a rock ridge break with ledges and crevaces, but tree canopy likely typical for larger polygon.
